Yesterday was my cleaning day and I managed to get quite a bit done around the house. The lower level is "spic and span" as my Dad would say and I was happy to get it done so that I could concentrate on writing the rest of the week. But, let me tell you, it wasn't an easy day.
I work/write better when I have chores completed and that was my plan until I was interrupted by the County weather bulletin beeping loudly on my television. At first, I thought it was a test of the early broadcasting system, so I continued to dust the living room furniture. When I looked over at the TV, I saw maps with red, yellow, orange areas and realized that it was my area! I raced over with my rag in hand, I watched the words go across the lower part of the screen informing me that a tornado watch was in effect for my area. Well, now. That's a new one for me. I'd been in a hurricane before, but not a tornado.
I thought I'd certainly have time to vacuum the dining room, so I did just that. I was glad I'd had the Weather Channel on because the tornado watch quickly turned into a tornado warning, in effect until 10 pm. What the heck? I cleaned the television screen as I watched the maps pop up on the screen and then, I saw my town listed. Holy shit. I wrapped the vacuum cleaner cord around the machine and something told me to leash up my Pug. I looked around for my cat and didn't see him, so I called him and he appeared. Yes, my cat comes when I call him.
The severe thunderstorm with a high chance for tornadoes seemed to be following the path along Interstate 81 going north and within five or ten minutes, the loud beeping resumed and a voice said that if you live in this town, you should take cover NOW. The power of words. I heard NOW and I didn't move for a couple of seconds. I was dumbfounded. Was this really happening? Now? That town is very close to where I live! If the tornado was following the route they described, I had only minutes before it would hit. The weather people predicted the severe weather would veer off 81 N and head east, but try telling that to a tornado. Hey tornado, you're predicted to go east, so go east and leave us alone! Who the heck knows with tornadoes? They're as unpredictable as I was as a teen. Now, I had to think where I would be safest. My Pug stood at the front door, wondering when the hell we were going for our walk. I forgot he had his leash on!
The stone cellar of my 107-year old house is solid, but unfortunately, there are three sets of small windows, as well as hundreds of spider webs. I didn't really know what to do and I hate spiders, so I grabbed my cell phone, took the leash that had a very confused Pug at the other end (who is terrified of thunder and lightning) and looked around for my cat and saw him in the kitchen because he hated the loud noises that were coming from the television set. I realized that the area on the first floor of my house has nine windows and a kitchen door with a window, but the area near the door that leads to my basement is shielded by the dining room door that I could close and the refrigerator would block us. I dragged my Pug into the cubby, closed both doors and we sat in the dark. Where was my cat? I called out to him and saw him on the kitchen table (where he's not allowed, of course), looking at me.
I hadn't realized it had gotten so dark outside which added to my increasing anxiety. I texted my children and my sister to let them know that I was okay and to warn them that they should be on alert as the tornadoes (from what I could hear from the television in the other room, through a closed door) was heading east toward the DC area. Shoot! I knew my daughter was in class in Virginia and my son is in NYC working. Then, my sister called to ask if I was okay. I said we were, but that it was pretty scary. She was at home and said that she feared a tornado more than a hurricane and I had to agree as they are so unpredictable. I told her to keep in touch and I hung up.
The beeping continued and I realized I had a bad headache. Just then, I felt my cat near my feet and I picked him up. We three sat in the dark listening to the rain and the wind outside. I worried about all the objects on my patio that could be turned into projectiles. Great. Right through my windows or my neighbor's windows. I thought about the people of Oklahoma and any other place in the US that had been hit by a tornado. This was scary as hell. I worried about all the people on 81 in their cars who might not have anywhere safe to get to, much like the people of Oklahoma. Me who loves extreme weather and watching storm chaser stories had gotten a small dose of what it really feels like. Not good. I've always listened carefully to tornado survivor stories and marveled at what had saved them--a mattress over their bodies, a closet, the bathtub. There was nothing to put over my head where I was sitting and I wondered if I had a helmet anywhere! I laughed to myself at the absurd picture of me wearing a helmet, but hey. I sat petting my animals and realized that yes, petting an animal can calm you down.
I also wondered if I could clean behind the fridge as I sat there. Nothing like multi-tasking in a tornado warning! Instead, I sat still and checked FB to see if friends in my town had heard about the twister warning and sure enough, two had posted. I posted that I was okay and at home. I worried for my elderly neighbor and tried to call him, but he didn't answer. Great. I was glad I'd taken my high blood pressure meds that morning as my fear rose.
I had a gut feeling that I was going to be okay and tried to keep my imagination from running away from me with visuals of the Oklahoma tornadoes I'd seen. Ten minutes later, I ventured out of my cubby to the TV and sure enough, the warnings were now for areas along route 340 going toward Frederick, MD. It was going northeast toward Baltimore. I have friends all over that area and I prayed for them.
That evening, three tornadoes hit Maryland, sheesh. One to two hours from me. Trees damaged, garages and sheds obliterated, and flooded streets and houses in the DC area. This week, we have more severe weather coming our way. I'd better get writing today! Not only is it hurricane season, but we also have to worry about tornadoes now. The derecho that hit my town hard last year was the first one that local friends remember ever hitting our town, but there have been tornadoes before. I didn't know that...guess I DO have to have a tornado preparedness kit in place. Oy vey. After buying extra water, a better flashlight, batteries, extra dog and cat food, and canned food for me, I'm going to buy a pack of college-ruled notebooks, a bunch of pencils and an eraser or two so that I can continue to write while I ride out whatever chooses to come my way.
Happy calm Tuesday, I pray!
Peace and love,
Ellie

The Nest
I don't know when the first day of spring is this year, so I'm pretending it's today. The skies are blue, the sun is shining and it's a beautiful, albeit chilly day.
On our walk this morning, Ozzy and I came across a bird's nest in a tree that we've probably passed every day. Either I never noticed the nest or it's being prepared. I raised up on my tip toes to peek inside and it was empty. The nest sits on a branch of a young tree in our common area where people walk their dogs and of course, there are those who don't pick up after their dogs. It's annoying because I have to walk gingerly, looking down or I'm liable to step in a hot mess that usually isn't easy to remove from my shoes or boots which has, of course, happened.
I'm surprised the birds have built a nest in this spot because it's heavily traveled and the little tree is barely seven feet high. Last summer, I heard chirping and found a baby bird lying on the ground, its eyes barely open. I always walk with my eyes to the ground for poop purposes which is a good thing because I might have stepped on the baby. The birdling was weak, wet and not happy about his situation. He kept opening his mouth for food and my immediate impulse was to pick up the birdling and place it in the nest I'd discovered on a low branch of the tree closest to the baby. But I didn't touch the baby for fear that I'd do something wrong. I remembered someone telling me that if a human touches a baby bird, its mother might reject it and I didn't know if that was an old myth, so I went home to search the Internet to see what I should do. As I walked home, I had a real fear that the many feral cats in my neighborhood would snatch the baby before I got back. I was a nervous wreck!
What I learned was that I had to fill a clean, plastic container with shredded paper and nail it to the tree, as close to the nest as I could and using gloves, pick up the baby and place it in the makeshift nest. I left Ozzy in the house and ran back to the common area with the materials to save this baby -- I was on a mission! Thank goodness the baby was still there. I looked around for the mother, but I didn't see any birds. I could hear one though, off in the distance as I nailed the container to the tree.
The instant I picked up the baby, a bird came out of nowhere and swooped down, aiming for my head! I ducked and honest to God, that bird continued her 'attack' until I moved away from the tree and crossed the street. Then, the bird sat on a power line and we watched each other. How stupid of me to think that the bird would be thankful that I'd rescued the baby! I laughed at my naivete and told the bird that I would have done the same thing if anyone had touched my babies.
The next day, Ozzy and I went out for our walk and the nest was empty. I listened and checked the surrounding area and nothing. I hoped the bird had taken the baby to a safer location, but I also wondered if a cat had indeed killed the birdling. I'd never know. I'd done my part and realized that nature would do as nature does. I also laughed because if it weren't for the poop left behind by irresponsible dog owners , I might not have been looking down that day :) C'est la vie.
Happy weekend to you!

Holiday Love
Good morning!
First of all, I would like to thank my readers, friends and family for joining me on my blogging journey with Blogger this year! I've enjoyed my time in my new blogging home and the 852 page views are awesome! It has been quite a good year for my children and I and we are thankful! I am thankful for you, as well :)
I wish you and yours a beautiful, safe Holiday season and all the best for the New Year!
My friend Ruth has invited me to a Christmas party tonight, the first of the Holiday season for me, and I'm excited. I haven't seen the hosts for quite a while and they are a fun bunch - a young, fun bunch :) I'm finally feeling the Christmas spirit! I need to pack today, so that I'll be ready for my trip to Northern Virginia to see my kids...I might be a bit tired from the night before!
Tomorrow morning, I take the train to DC and will Metro to my daughter's house to help her get ready for our family Christmas dinner. I'm excited to see my kids and family! I'm not really ready, but will have a day to buy last minute gifts in the DC area. If I can't find great gifts in the malls of Northern Virginia, they just don't exist :)
I leave my Pug, Ozzy and my kitten, Pierre in my pet sitter, Junior's good hands with a new ceramic heater for the kitchen which doesn't ever seem to be warm enough. I will miss them! I'm off to share the Holidays and make new memories with my human kids now and leave my furry kids behind :)
My thoughts and prayers are also with those who find themselves alone during this Holiday season, with those who are hurting, and with the Sandy Hook families who face a Christmas without their precious children and family members. I also pray for the military members who can't be with their families, the elderly and with those who are in hospitals, unable to get home. I pray for those in hospice and in shelters.
God bless and keep you all.
Peace and Holiday love to you,
Ellie

Furry Blessings
Good morning to you!
You know how people say that having a pet can change your life? It's true. A pet can add much joy, love and comfort to you and only a pet can give you unconditional love. I am a huge animal lover and can't see myself living without pets.
As a kid, we had a Papillion named Monster (he was feisty!) and a laid back Westie named Ricky who loved to dig much to my parent's dismay. As a parent, I made sure my kids had lots of animals in the house. Over the years, we eventually owned four Cocker Spaniels, four cats, a cheeky parakeet named Juju, many fish, two small lizards and one turtle who loved my ex-husband. I swear that turtle sat on his rock all day long and when my then-husband bent over the aquarium, that turtle did a jig. I've never seen anything like it :)
All but one Cocker were rescues and so were two of our cats. I even kept a small aquarium on our front porch so that my kids and their friends could keep minnows and pond critters from their adventures near the creek in the common area. Our house was animal central and I didn't have a problem with it. I felt, "what's one more?"
When my kids were in university, the last two Cockers passed away and when they moved away after college, our two Birman cats, Zach and Mia passed away. I've been present at all their passings which is traumatic and sad. I cried and cried to lose my precious babies.
Three years later, Ozzy, a three-year old Pug, adopted me at my local Petsmart and he's my bud! I take Ozzy to the river and to visit friends who are pet friendly. He's a great dog and when I wanted another Pug as I loved the breed so much, Lulu entered our lives. A rescue Pug from South Carolina who grew up on the streets, literally. She lasted a year with me. The first dog I've ever "given up on". Lulu was a sweet girl, but she was also a tough cookie. Lulu didn't adjust to living with another dog, she wanted to be top dog and Ozzy wasn't having it. My friend and her daughter now have Lulu and I'm happy that she found a good home. She is top dog at their house!
A year after moving to West Virginia, quite by accident, I met Pierre at our local Humane Society. Love at first sight :) He was ten weeks old when I brought him home and Ozzy accepted him immediately. They are quite the pair and I love watching them play and horse around. Our new family was complete and I also found a great pet sitter as I love to travel. Life is good!
This morning, I'm looking into installing a surveillance camera in my kitchen. Yes, you read right. The peaceful home Ozzy and I shared is...less than peaceful. Cats will rearrange your life, force you to rearrange furniture and knick knacks, and remind you to shut doors you previously left open!
I need to see what Pierre (kitten) and Ozzy (Pug) get into while I'm sleeping. Well, I actually know what they get into while I'm sleeping because the evidence is usually strewn on the kitchen floor. All over the kitchen floor. I want to SEE how these capers happen.
Last week, I bought a large box of Rice Krispies because I was craving a big bowl of cereal and at five dollars a box, that's an expensive treat! I had two bowls the night before and I left the box on the counter. In the morning, the entire box of cereal was all over the kitchen floor! This morning, I woke up to a brand new package of napkins, shredded all over the kitchen floor and Pierre has managed to figure out how to open the bottom drawer of my stove! How does he do it?!
Ozzy never got into anything. He never got into the trash, into shopping bags, my purse nor did I have to keep the toilet paper roll in a closed basket. I could leave jewelry lying on my dresser, my placemats on the kitchen table and spare change in a bowl. Not now. Pierre is one busy kitten at night and his accomplice Ozzy is right behind him...when the object(s) reach the floor. I can't leave my coffee or tea unmanned, don't dare have lit candles in the house, have removed objects I don't want broken and I've lost more pens and pencils than I can shake a stick at. Batteries, Chap Sticks and lighters, too! God forbid I should leave my laptop open...sheesh.
Pierre has been the impetus to redecorate my house for the Holidays. Christmas cards are now taped to a mirror, I have no ornaments on my tree (only lights) and the dining table is sans Holiday tablecloth. I wouldn't dream of wasting money on a Holiday bouquet or flower arrangement and poinsettias are poisonous for animals! Did my other cats do these things or was I so busy with kids and other animals to notice? Did I have more energy and less stuff? Have I grown so stuck in my ways that I didn't notice?
The only change I've had to make with Ozzy since Pierre came to live with us is that the litter box now sits on my dryer and it's permanent...I'll let you figure that one out!
I'm constantly trying to stay one step ahead of Pierre, but when that kitten lays on my lap and purrs, I'm putty in his hands. When Ozzy joins us on the couch and snores lightly beside me, that's pure heaven. When I need a hug, a kiss and someone to baby, they're right there with me. What're ya gonna do? Gotta love animals :)
Peace and love,
Ellie

But, I Digress...
Hi all,
We had snow flurries this morning! I woke up, checked my phone for the time (no one wears watches anymore) and at 8:38, we had wet snow and snow flurries. I was as excited as a kid, teen or adult who is hoping to get out of school or work or the commute to work. And, I work from home :) Hell, as an at-home Mom, I was excited for my kids to stay home so we could play! They had my ex-husband's genes in that respect, however...they never wanted to miss a day of school. But, I digress...
Then, it was all over. The snow flurries landed on wet sidewalks and it was all over, really before it even began. Bummer. I really wanted to see snow on the ground this morning. I wanted to put on my old gray robe, make a pot of vanilla chai tea (chai means tea, doesn't it?) and write to my heart's content, watching the snow fall from the dining room window.
I've always wanted to live in a Currier & Ives painting. I want to live in a thatched roof cottage by a lazy river that has a brick bridge going that leads to my children's homes because they live a stone's throw from my house. But, I digress...
Of course, I put on my old gray robe, made a pot of vanilla chai and powered up the laptop. I edited my novel yesterday from 9 in the morning to nearly 10 at night with a few breaks. I was on a roll! Why? Because I forgot to pay my cable bill that includes the Internet :) No distractions and it worked like a charm. I made huge strides on my novel and I'm so, so pleased with the first ten chapters. But, I digress...wait. What is this blog about any way? Writing, snow, or kids?
So, I powered up the laptop this morning, shoo'd the cat away from my vanilla chai (which must be a drug as powerful as catnip for my Maine Coon, Pierre) and took Ozzy my Pug out for a quick walk. On our walk, I noticed that Main Street has put on their Holiday accessories which are beautiful. I just LOVE walking through small towns with big Christmas and holiday decorations like the town I live in. It's charming this time of year, but I digress...
You know what? I don't have a damn clue what this blog is about. I started losing the thread almost immediately and I don't think I even had a thread! I just started writing. That's the way it happens with me. I just start to write and I end up with a short story, five poems (I canNOT write just poem) or a blog. I write dialogue, scenes and character descriptions. I rewrite paragraphs, whole chapters, beginnings and endings. I never get bored.
I don't really know what today is all about, but I DO know that I have to write like I have to breathe. I have to write and you should, too.
So back to my novel :) Happy writing.
Peace and love,
Ellie

The Denutting of Pierre
Hi all,
My kitten Pierre will be under the knife in a few hours which I hate, but it's necessary. My pet sitter, Junior (75-year old Junior) calls it "denutting". I laughed out loud when he said that to me, but I'm sure Pierre isn't laughing. Denutted. That Junior is a hoot :)
Pierre and I met at the Humane Society on the outskirts of my town and it was love at first sight. Ozzy (my Pug) and I fell in love at a rescue event at Petsmart in Virginia nearly four years ago. Do you get the idea that I can't go to rescues or shelters? You'd be right and that's why I don't go on a regular basis! I'd come home with puppies and kitties every single time. It's very difficult for me to leave empty-handed.
Junior says I have the best dog and kitten in the world and I have to agree with him. They're awesome furry children. I told Junior that they're great because they were raised right :) They're well-loved, they get along great, and they give me unconditional love every day. That's worth the price of admission as far as I'm concerned.
I might have to juggle a purring kitten on my lap as I try to edit my manuscript or find several lines of "zzzzzzzzzzzzz" on the page when I return to the room, and I might have to take several breaks during the day to walk and play with Ozzy, but it's all worth it. Watching them play and nap around me is very comforting and a lot of fun. Ozzy welcomed Pierre with open paws and it's heart-warming to see them drinking from the same water bowl. They don't have to as the kitten has his own food and water bowls, but Pierre loves his big brother and Ozzy is happy to share.
What writer doesn't need a warm lap and several breaks during the day to get away from the laptop? My pets remind me to stop and smell the roses when I'm headed inside my head with my novel and they remind me to stand up and stretch my tired muscles from sitting at the laptop for hours on end. Lord knows I need the exercise as I sit on my bum nearly all day long with this novel!
My kids live two hours from me and I can't imagine living in a house without pets. I would be too lonely. Pierre and Ozzy don't talk much, but they're great company and even better listeners :)
Happy Saturday to you!
Peace and love,
Ellie
